狆は犬は犬だが､元々中国陜西省や四川省または南洋の島々から、中国人やオランダ人によって日本に輸入されていた。当時の高級愛玩動物で、大名行列に籠に入ったその姿を見たと人々が騒ぐほど、古くからは貴重な犬だった。
蘭川は上田令吉「根付の研究」P1285「蘭亭の門人にして牙刻をなす、主として動物を作る。中期の人なり（彫銘蘭川）」と記載された19世紀初め大阪蘭派屈指レベルの根付師だった。
本作は蘭川生涯唯一無二の唐犬系｢狆｣として､解剖学的に正確かつ巧妙に関節を自然紐通しで利用し､構図面ではふり返し様子はまるで憂鬱な貴夫人と見える驚異的な傑作｡作品自身も言うまでもなく､構図だけでも貴重資料と認識されている｡
狆は屋内で飼う（日本では犬は屋外で飼うと認識）犬と猫の中間の獣の意味から作られたようである。狆の祖先犬は、当初から日本で唯一の愛玩犬種として改良・繁殖された。祖先犬は、中国から朝鮮を経て日本に渡った、チベットの小型犬と見られる。詳しくはわからないが、おそらくチベタン・スパニエル系統の短吻犬種（鼻のつまった犬）で、ペキニーズとも血統的なつながりがあると考えられる。
『続日本紀』には、「天平四年、聖武天皇の御代、夏五月、新羅より蜀狗一頭を献上した」とある。天平4年は奈良時代、西暦では732年だが、このときに朝鮮（新羅時代377年-935年）から日本の宮廷に、蜀狗、即蜀（中国四川省）の犬が贈られたという記録で、これが狆に関連する最古の記録。
