大阪兰派巨匠兰川作品。神态优美，双耳下垂，尾偏向一侧。墨染毛雕齐整，精雕细琢，巧妙利用四肢间空隙形成自然绳孔，狆呈回首姿势，可谓回眸一笑百媚生。底面落款画押，包浆温润，完美品相。
日本自古狗分犬（Inu）和狆（Chin）两种。养在屋外的称犬，也即中国的狗。“狆”则专指圈养屋内服务皇室或贵族的伴侣犬，类似今日宠物狗。
狆为猫脸犬科动物，又称蜀狗，自古即作为珍玩上贡。《续日本记》：“天平四（732）年夏五月。聖武天皇御代。新羅献上蜀狗一頭”。及至德川时代，大名重金贿赂中国和荷兰商人走私，秘藏深宅以笼圈养。贵妇偶尔携带外出，群众围观，市井轰动。
兰川为大阪兰派宗师兰亭之得意弟子，上田令吉《根付之研究》P1285记“（兰川）乃兰亭之门人。以牙刻著称。尤擅动物。中期（1800-1840）人也”。兰川唐犬类根付传世若干，但母狆此为仅见。类似母犬可参见邦瀚斯2011年11月8日伦敦“Harriet Szechenyi日本艺术专场”拍品No157（成交价46850 英镑）。提要18世纪末有误，兰派宗师兰亭活跃于1810年间，身为弟子的兰川不可能活跃于1800年代以前。
