无落款，但附有正守本人原创俳句两首，因此认定为正守作品。正守设计的根付忠实传统,非常注重细节和原创。题材取自日本和中国传统—安静的人物或动物，结构精致细腻，雕工熟练出色，就像此件作品，虎眼采用镶嵌形式。
上田令吉《根付之研究》P210著录正守：“以牙雕著称，中期（天明至宽政）人也”。长久以来被公认为为顶级雕刻师，晚年依然保持巧手妙雕，作风扎实。正守才华横溢，所作俳句委婉优雅，书法精美，文笔俱佳。
有著录的世界最大的牙雕虎根付。大英博物馆和卢浮宫的藏品只有4cm，都只能称之为“虎”，只有这只堪称“大虎”。
日本四面环海，自古没有虎这种生物存在，丰臣秀吉侵略朝鲜，特地命令加藤清正务必弄回来两只虎，死活不论。加藤清正还真拖回来两只死虎，“清正公朝鲜打虎”直到现在都是语文教科书必读，相当于日本版的武松打虎，人尽皆知。
16世纪末开始，日本画家开始尝试画虎，用了将近100年才勉强成功。中国俗话画虎不成反类犬，看似简单的事情往往最难。虎如果没有虎威和虎气，看起来不是像猫就是像狗，总之不像虎。中国明清版画偶尔有虎，犯的毛病也一样。20世纪后西洋写实主义盛行，画虎总算不像猫和狗，但看起来太假，还是没有虎气和虎威。有兴趣的可以看看麝香虎骨膏的广告，直到现在还是一眼假。
18世纪初，京都派雕刻虎成功，从此成为专利。20世纪初开始，木雕和牙雕的日本虎根付成为欧美博物馆的镇馆之宝，尤其是牙雕，几乎是日本根付或“日本微型象牙雕刻艺术品”的代名词。自古没有虎的日本，以虎的题材著名世界，这事很讽刺。
目前不知道牙雕虎根付为何很难超过5cm，推测和象牙直径有关。总之可以很负责的表态，有著录的牙雕虎根付，这是世界之最。就算不论个头，单论虎威和虎气，也完美的，毫无争议的超越了以收藏根付著名的大英博物馆，卢浮宫，犹太博物馆（维也纳），洛杉矶美术馆，波斯顿美术馆（根付数量世界第一）。
19世纪后期的雕刻艺术不堪入目，年代越晚越卡通化，万兽之王的神韵和风采丧失殆尽。眼的镶嵌开始投机取巧，早期用海松，晚期用琥珀，中看不中用。自以为是的“细密雕刻”使根付变成脆弱娇贵的摆件，毫无实用性，完全丧失压坠的功能。
