無銘だが入手同時二枚の俳句から推測されたところ、正守の作品と認定する。
雄々しく吠えるデカい大迫力な虎、誠に良い根付。虎の縞模様、毛彫りなども細やかにしっかり写実。精巧な牙彫工芸により留め具の実用性と芸術性兼備。こうした名物は稀で大名自身も「頗る珍奇の名を得た」と述懐。実際、その構図は本来虎ではない、長興寺蔵織田信長の画像にそっくり。端麗なうち、鋭敏果断の性格を覗かせる。
正守は上田令吉「根付の研究」P210「牙刻をなす、中期の人なり」と記載された天明―寛政頃に京都で活躍していた根付師だった。その時天災、飢饉、打壊しが相次ぎ、民衆に対する弾圧も厳しく極めて憂鬱な時代だった。正守は大虎の根付に心を込めて、社会不安を一掃する英雄を待望し、天下布武を唱えた信長に憧れるだろう。
