最上の材料を使い全体に細かい掘りがされている懐玉斎正次ならではの良品。白蛇の根付はとても縁起がよいもの。蛇と龍はそれだけで高額になることも事実。表現するためにも高度な技が必要で難度の高いモチーフであったと考えられるため、十二支の根付の中でも数少なく大変貴重な作品。追年款や仮託銘ではなく本物だ。
白蛇(はくじゃ)とは白化現象を起こした蛇のこと。その希少性により日本各地で縁起のいい動物として信仰の対象となっている。弁才天の使いとして、富をもたらす存在として知られる。
相場格言に「辰巳天井、午尻下がり、未辛抱、申酉騒ぐ。戌は笑い、亥固まる、子は繁栄、丑はつまずき、寅千里を走り、卯は跳ねる」があり、巳年の相場は俗に上昇相場といわれる。
懐玉斎正次(かいきょくさいまさつぐ,1813~1892):大阪の人。木彫牙彫ともに写実に徹し、最上の材料を選び、細緻正確にして力のある品格高い作品を作って、根付界第一の名人と称される。上田令吉氏「根付の研究」1258記:「二十歳頃迄は懐玉堂、三十歳頃迄は正次、五十歳頃迄は懐玉、その後は懐玉斎正次と銘せり」。また「非常に精巧美作は十中八七が海外に輸出せらる」と悲しみ嘆く(227-228頁)。

Good condition
The Japanese ivory netsuke depicting a coiled white snake squeezing between the coils. Powerful and of great quality with very fine details. The snake with open jaws and the tongue out make this netsuke a work of great effect and that strikes us immediately. signed in a rectangular reserve masatsugu(kyaikyokusai).
