日本远洋捕鲸始于1934年，此后远洋捕鲸事业不断发展、壮大并采用国外捕鲸新技术。1939年先后有6艘远洋捕鲸船驶往南极洋，1年内捕杀了2665头蓝鲸，3344头长须鲸及883头座头鲸和647头抹香鲸。1944年又发展了北太平洋远洋捕鲸队，主要捕杀灰鲸及抹香鲸。
Japan’s ocean-going whaling began in 1934. Since then, the ocean-going whaling industry has continued to develop and expand, and foreign whaling technologies have been adopted. From 1938 to 1939, six ocean-going whaling ships sailed to the Antarctic Ocean, killing 2665 blue whales, 3344 fin whales, 883 humpback whales and 647 sperm whales that year. In 1944, the North Pacific ocean-going whaling team was developed, mainly hunting gray whales and sperm whales.
