Spintriae是非常受欢迎且昂贵的收藏品，但它们在古代实际上有什么用途？它们被称为“纺锤体”。从公元1世纪初开始，青铜或黄铜铸造了单 Spintria，每枚硬币的一面描绘了性行为，另一面描绘了罗马数字（从I到XVI）。
具体用途不明，通常认为被用来代替官方罗马货币，在妓院里用来支付妓女以换取性服务。Spintriae拉丁文本意为“连接在一起的手镯”，用在这里指前后相连形式的性交动作。每枚硬币上描绘的性行为对应于反面列出的价格，不同面值的货币上刻着不同姿势的性爱图案，用来支付给妓女。这个系统也有助于消除语言障碍。
这些硬币可能是作为门票的象征，部分在剧院，部分在温泉浴场。虽然多数研究者认可罗马官方妓院流通货币的说法，但这种钱币在妓院遗址并没有出土，大多出土于古罗马的公共浴场（作用雷同妓院）。可以肯定这种硬币属于代用币的范畴，但是具体作用还有待研究。
还有一种说法，这种硬币是为了迎合罗马皇帝提比略的变态喜好而铸造的。这位罗马帝国的第二位皇帝在古典作家笔下被描述为一位好色的暴君，铸行这种奇怪的性爱币也不足为奇，遗憾的是依然没有证据。
疑似公元14-37年出土的实物为黄铜铸造，直径约2.2cm，重约4.25g，仅供参考。

フランスから入手した面白いコイン、代用貨幣でかレプリカか委細不明。磁石にはつかないので合金と思う。
売春宿ではスピントリアと呼ばれる男女の性行為が描写されたコインが使用されていたという説がある。しかし、この説には否定的な意見も多く、単なる遊戯用のコインだった等とする見方も強い。

Spintriae are highly popular and expensive collectibles, but what purpose did they actually serve in Antiquity?
They are known as “spintriae.” A single spintria is minted from bronze or brass beginning in early first century CE, each coin depicts a sexual act on one face and a Roman numeral – ranging from I to XVI – on the other.
It’s unclear what purpose these coins served. One popular theory holds that they were used in place of official Roman currency in brothels, where they could be used to pay prostitutes in exchange for sexual services.
An extension of the sex-token theory maintains that the sex act depicted on each coin corresponds to the price listed on the opposite face, a system that would also have helped dissolve language barriers.
It is possible that these coins served as token entrance ticket, partly in the theatre partly in the thermal baths.
